Don’t Be a Hero: Following the Extras in 10 Cloverfield Lane

what year is it

HI EVERYONE!!!!

So I realized the other day it’s been a while since my last post. And instead of telling you why I haven’t been writing, or what I’ve been doing instead, I’m just going to get right into it and talk about my hypothesis of what ties all (two) of the Cloverfield films together, especially since a 3rd one is coming out soon. Guess you’ll just have to get to the end of the post to find out what I’ve been up to…. [spoiler alert for 10 Cloverfield LaneCloverfield, and my life] Continue reading “Don’t Be a Hero: Following the Extras in 10 Cloverfield Lane”

Man, It’s a Hot One

Articles like this make me happy. Know where your pop culture and obsessions come from, people!
It’s been a while, but I’m working on new post and getting back into writing. Maybe once I’ve said it aloud (re: on the interwebz) I’ll actually finish it?
We shall see. In the mean time, don’t mind me as I keep investigating Harambe memes.

The Other Type of Happy Ending

We need to stop meeting like this. And by “this” I mean a few weeks late. I had a week long trip to Florida with my whole immediate family (bigger than most people’s distant families), followed shortly thereafter by a cousin’s wedding/family reunion . And then I recently started a new job. So things have been adventurous and busy lately. Life is now seeming to settle down, which I prefer because that means that I’ll have more time to focus on the thing I love the most: sleeping. Wait! I mean rambling about mythology! So read on to hear about the nature of mythology and happy endings, focusing on Jupiter Ascending and Ex Machina. As always, major spoilers after the jump.

Sexualized Saturdays: Childbearing and Womanhood

While I’m recuperating from a week long family visit and the start of a new job, enjoy this little write up of the pitfalls of childlessness in The Avengers, Doctor Who, and Orphan Black. It’s a quick, short read with thoughtful comments. New post soon!

Baby-having. It’s traditionally one of the societal markers of womanhood—women are supposed to have uteruses, and men aren’t, and if you’re a woman and fail to successfully grow a baby, for whatever reason, that makes you a failure at your gender.

I’m a cis woman, and society has told me from the get-go that one day I’ll be giving birth to the next generation. I spent the first eighteen or so years of my life plotting out elaborate (and often fandom-based) names for my future kids, and now today, when I tell people I don’t really know that I want children after all, I have to qualify it with a reassurance that I might change my mind—before they assure me that I will.

What this boils down to is gender essentialism. This method of thinking boils women down to what thousands of years of society says is woman’s defining trait…

My Myth Colleagues Rock

I’m all about sharing the love here at Mythic Ramblings. So when one of my closest friends writes an fantastic article, I just have to support her. I know a lot about a lot of things, but RPGs is one of my shortcomings. Good thing I have the wonderful Whitney Beltrán to educate and inform me about all the ways some indie RPGs are bringing diversity and inclusivity to their games. It’s amazing, scholarly, and very accessible to those of you who may not have a ton of experience with RPGs. I’m very proud and inspired to see how one of my myth colleagues is making mythology and narratives work in a fun medium. Head on over to Tor to read it.

Multiplicity in Protagonists, or, The More the Merrier

Guess who just got done being sick and bedridden for an entire week and still can’t really talk right?

Me. It was me.

So that was a painful and awful week I just went through. But I’m back in business now. And guess who’s also back in business?

Orphan Black. It’s Orphan Black.

This season has hit the ground running and it’s got me thinking about how awesome it is to have multiple female characters in a show. I’ve noticed this in other places as well, most notably Frozen – but also some old school mythological references. And thus the rambling begins…. PCA 2015 Recap

Last time, on Mythic Ramblings…

You’ll thank me someday. Probably Friday.

No vaccines for you, sweet child.

What sort of fairy tale ending is – oh.

I was more disappointed than anything.

This time, on Mythic Ramblings, I’ll be talking about some great presentations I saw at the 2015 National Popular Culture Association Conference in New Orleans. Some of them were awesome, others piqued my interest, but all of them definitely happened.  Continue reading “PCA 2015 Recap”

Comix Experience’s Monthly Comic Book Club

So I’ve lately been pulled more and more into comic books (it’s awful, really) and really love the easy access to comic books San Francisco offers, from the stores to the public library. The oldest in the city, Comix Experience, is offering a monthly comic book club, for people inside and outside of the Bay Area, to help cover the costs of the newly increased minimum wage to offer employees a realistic living wage. There’s going to be a monthly meeting (which will be streamed for those out-of-towners) for people to discuss that month’s selection.

I’ve already signed up and am really looking forward to meeting new people! If you’re in the Bay Area, check it out and see if you want to subscribe. This is great for even those not in the area — they’re even serious about international shipping. Sometimes it’s hard to meet people who can geek out about something, but still talk critically. I was just at PCA (update about that forthcoming) and it really made me realize how much I miss/crave that discourse surrounding things I’m passionate about. So hopefully I can get a fix of discussion with a dose of social interaction.

And, of course, thanks to Neil Gaiman for spreading the word about this. I really love how much he keeps his fans in the know about things he’s passionate about. Sometimes you hate when celebrities plug things, but Neil’s always good about keeping it industry related and something you actually want to know about.

Massive Movie Analysis: Cinderella UPDATED

Alright, I know I mentioned Popol Vuh in the last post and I hinted at blood and gore and other pleasant things. Unfortunately, life doesn’t go as planned and so I will not be writing about K’iche’ Mayan myths. You will have to learn to deal with disappointing news when you’re older and this is but a small exercise. You’ll thank me someday. Probably Friday. Maybe Saturday. But definitely by Sunday.

Instead, I’ll be talking about Cinderella –  its wonders, its pitfalls, and Cate Blanchett’s amazing wardrobe. Really, you’re getting a great deal. Spoilers after the jump.

UPDATED: I had the wrong day for my PCA presentation. If you’re there, I’ll be going Thursday morning at 8 am!
